Tzompantli

Sheila Peón, artista visual española, explora la historia prehispánica de los Mexicas a través de su obra «Tzompantli». Su interés surgió al descubrir que su cumpleaños, el 2 de noviembre, coincide con el Día de Muertos en México, lo que la llevó a investigar los Tzompantli, altares donde se exhibían cráneos humanos como ofrendas a los dioses.

En su trabajo, Peón utiliza una variedad de materiales, desde óleos hasta resinas y hoja de oro, para expresar las texturas y relieves que evocan la riqueza cultural de México. Los Tzompantli, construidos como grandes estructuras con cráneos, eran utilizados en rituales para honrar a deidades como Huitzilopochtli y Tláloc, vinculando la muerte con la fertilidad de las cosechas. El término proviene del náhuatl, donde «tzontli» significa cráneo y «pantli» hilera, refiriéndose a la disposición de los cráneos sacrificados, en su mayoría prisioneros de guerra. La obra de Peón invita a reflexionar sobre la complejidad de estas tradiciones y su impacto en la identidad cultural.
